17 is too young to plan the rest of your life.

I recently read an article online that echoes exactly how I feel about University (College in the US). Did I go to University? Yes I did. I have my bachelor degree in psychology. Why did I go to University in the first place? Simple. All my friends were going. If you didn't go on to University in my school, it was because you were a dummy, pretty much. I chose psychology because there was absolutely nothing else I was interested in.
I can't tell you how much I WISH I had taken a year or two off to work, see what the real world was like, find my interests. Instead, I went directly to University, commuted since I couldn't afford to live on campus (basically missing out on everything that University is good for), worked all throughout the year and then worked 3 jobs in the summer and had a fucking mental breakdown from being burnt out, and sunk $25,000 of my OWN money into a degree that I've done NOTHING with. At least I didn't have student loans, but that's because I wasn't approved for any so it could've been a LOT worse.
Now that we've done away with Grade 13 kids are graduating high school even younger and being burdened with making decisions to dictate their careers for the rest of their lives. Sure, you can change careers...but what about the dough you've already sunken into all the learning from the first one?
Anyway. Here is the article. It's a good read...I totally know what he is saying about how people *gasp* and get completely offended at the thought of University/College not being the be all end all.
Like I always say when asked if I'm a student to get a discount somewhere, "Aren't we all students...of LIFE?" I don't usually get the discount though, wah woh.
READ ME!
