So Shutter Island. Without giving anything away, it's about Leo being a Detective and he and his partner (played by Mark Ruffalo, who I used to hate, but for some reason I like him a lot now...I think he just started being in everything that it was just easier to like him) are sent to Shutter Island, where they keep violent mentally disturbed people and try and treat them. One of these violent mental patients has escaped, and is nowhere to be found on this island *sPoOkEy*. There's also talk of weird tests being done on the island, so Det. Hot is there to snoop around and figure that shit out.
I think since it got some shitty reviews that I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie, plus it's SUPER LONG (138mins) so I was worried that I was making a big time investment possibly for nothing...but this movie paid off big time. It was one of those movies that you think about a lot after watching it. I probably thought about it all day yesterday, and most of today (hence this entry). I haven't seen a movie like this in a long time. It wasn't scary, but it was creepy...it was psychological and well cast.
There were times where it felt like it should move along a little faster...some draggy parts...but not enough to turn me off of the story or what they were trying to accomplish. You have to expect that movies that are incredibly long probably have about 20mins of shit they probably could've edited out. For me, the perfect runtime on a movie is 90 mins. Maybe 100 mins in some cases, but you can convey everything in 90 (I'm talking to you, Judd Apatow, who's movies are ALL just a smidge too long that bridges the gap from 'hmm, this is a cool movie' to 'ugh...WE GET IT...END NOW') but that's a whole other blog topic.
Anyway, I recommend this movie. I kinda feel like watching it again. I want someone to talk to about it, so if you watch it let me know and we can discuss. I wish I belonged to a movie discussion club. Kinda like a book club, but without all the annoying reading.
I really liked this movie a lot. I also am in love with Mark Ruffalo so watch what you say about him.
ReplyDeleteYou get to see his junk in "In the Cut", to bad the movie sucks.
